What is VoIP?

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is the routing of voice conversations over the Internet or any other IP-based network. Or, in more common terms phone service over the Internet.

If you have a reasonable quality Internet connection you can get your phone service delivered to you through your Internet connection instead of from your local phone company. The voice data flows over a general-purpose packet-switched network, instead of traditional dedicated, circuit-switched voice transmission lines.

Voice over IP traffic may be deployed on any IP network, including ones lacking a connection to the rest of the Internet, for instance on a private building-wide LAN.

VoIP is also called IP Telephony, Internet telephony, and Digital Phone.
